Abanindranath Tagore
 
Born into an aristocratic family of Bengal, Abanindranath Tagore was richly endowed with literary and artistic talent. Abanindranath was among the first Indian artists to address issues of culture specificity and modernism. He began his career in the emergent years of Swadeshi movement and was a propagator of nationalist revivalist art. In 1907 he established the Indian Society of Oriental Art, Calcutta and founded "The Bengal School" which was repsonsible for pioneering Bengal Revivalist movement.The fame of Abanindranath as the reviver of Indian tradition and founder of a new movement, is in no way less than that of Abanindranath, the artist. Under his guidance, a new generation of painters was raised, like Nandalal Bose, Asit Halder, Kshitindranath Majumder and Jamini Roy, S.N.Gupta and a host of others. Abanindranath Tagore's works were exhibited in London and Paris in 1913, followed by another international exhibition in Japan in 1919. The largest number of his paintings - over 500 - form a part of Rabindra Bharati Society's collection at Jorasanko, Calcutta. They have been declared as National Art Treasures. ...
