Almelkar studied at the Sir J.J. School of Art. He held the post of Principal of Bombay's Nutan Kala Mandir. Almelkar's work was exhibited in several solo and group shows in India and internationally. He won the National award for excellence in art, and was invited as a state guest to Malaysia to deliver several lectures. His selected collections are with National Gallery of Modern Art and Lalit Kala Akademi Almelkar started his career as a landscape painter.
He painted impressionistic landscapes in bold style. He was influenced by the works of Walter Langhammer and N.S. Bendre. On the basis of the forms, concepts and colour of mediaeval miniatures, he evoked his own style from 1955 onwards. The period of 1960 to 1970 displayed the wonderful heights reached in his style. Almelkar painted Indian subjects with modern techniques and his works presented his experimental attitude. He created a distinctive style of drawing and painting, especially the eyes, so predominant as to attract the attention of the viewer.
