ABOUT ANJALI PUROHIT
Anjali Purohit is an artist based in Mumbai who paints in a modern realist, impressionist, expressionist style. She has studied the foundation course at the JJ School of Art, Bombay and held her first solo at the Bajaj Art Gallery, Nariman Point in 1995. She won the Maharashtra State Award for the best painting in the AIFACS organized national exhibition in 1997.
She believes that art, like language or music, is a medium of communication whereby the artist attempts to express her reaction to the world - nature, people, events, emotions, memories and situations. Something in each of these strikes the artist as significant, poignant, moving, curious or in some way worthy of note. She interprets that aspect and presents it through a medium that will best express the experience. If this dialogue happens, then the creation is complete.
Her works offer understated comment, tongue in cheek observations, nostalgic ruminations or then, sometimes, quirky, ironic asides. She explores an aesthetic that interprets personal experience in its social context and presents a perspective that suggests such a construction.
She has been a witness to the sad history of this fine metropolis for the past years and most of her work reflects her exploration of this relation with her land and its people.
